OUR STORY

My name is Spencer and I’ve spent the last 30 years in corporate America as a lawyer and a senior executive in the lucrative financial services industry. I spent countless hours on airplanes traveling to meet the demands of clients, while missing much the growing up years of my three children, who are now grown. I was not a multi-millionaire but the money was good, but it never seemed like it was enough. I was on a hampster wheel.

For several years I received nice bonuses, and I spent like it. Then there were years when the market was down and the bonuses were smaller, but I kept spending. After all, tuition didn’t decrease and the mortgage didn’t care if I had a down year.  As Paulie said in Goodfellas, “f**k you, pay me”.  Sometimes I was able to make it up the following year, but sometimes it didn’t work out.  As the years passed by and I found my self on the other side of 50, it all started to add up and pile up.  My life had started to eat away at my energy, my confidence and even my sense of well being.

One early morning I found myself in a middle seat on a non-stop flight from Honolulu to Chicago. I had been there on business, without my family.  They didn’t even miss me because they had gotten so used to me being gone that they barely noticed. I was miserable on that flight and I felt depleted. I had no energy and worst of all, I had no drive to change my situation.

Soon thereafter, I received a call from a friend who just had a feeling that I was dealing with some personal and professional struggles. After listening to me complain about my situation and about my lack of energy to change it, he gently reminded me of something I had forgotten somehow.  I had worth. Yes, I was down at the moment, but I had something to offer the world, even if I didn’t remember it.  But he went farther.  He sent me books,  articles and even curated a play list of TEDTalks for me to watch. He kept insisting I had to get my mojo back. It took some time, but I eventually started to listen.

Over the next several weeks, I decided to make some changes, small ones at first, but changes.  I started with my diet and then I started meditating each morning. Before too long I started excercising again. I started watching inspirational videos and reading books on motivation, spirituality and life hacks. I took courses in person and online, and finally I started to feel like I wasn’t so tired and unmotivated. I started to make a turn by living intentionally.

I thought I should share some of the experiences of my mind’s journey, and share the rich resources I had to curate over so many days and months.  And so, with the help of some very patient and wonderful friends and family, I founded Best Life After 50 as a collection of best ideas and a resource for people like me who want to stop feeling  tired all the time and who want to get that mojo back.

  1. This is a great about me page and thanks for sharing so openly with your bio Spencer. I really like the clean look of your website, and the personal feel of the content that you have created.
You write with authority. This has a relational feel to it and your passion for helping people to improve their lives over 50 is truly helpful and inspiring.
The site is clean, not cluttered and makes for easy navigation in the WP platform. I’ve just started my own busincess here at WA and are 6 weeks in. I’m looking forward to helping readers learn all about balance bikes for kids from my site ilovetoridemybike.com. Best of wishes to you and your business, and continuing to find a balance that gives you peace and happiness
